Chapter 15
An Excellent Summer
Greg and El Guru communicated through letters for a few months. Near the end of April, El Guru wrote that he went to Heidelberg to help make a presentation regarding statistical information about the drug abuse program for his clinic. Immediately after this concluded, he went to Luxembourg, met Frieda at a café, and they broke up. It was by mutual agreement with no hard feelings. El Guru stated, âI didnât want to get involved with someone who would try to dominate me and change me. That night in Boppard got me gun shy about going any further with her.â He also related that he was going to be trained as a lab tech for the clinic. âGreg, I remember you said you liked doing that stuff in Vietnam for a while. It will be an interesting change of pace for me for the months I have left.â
Greg wrote back right away and told him, âThe day after you get out of the Army, you will be bombarded by insurance companies hounding you to buy life and health insurance. They will call you, send you info in the mail, and they might even come to your door. Pick one company fast and forget the others. One bastard even told me a guy from another company was lying and he was a rep from the same company. By the way, I got accepted at graduate schools - two in Kansas and two in Massachusetts, and I have to make a decision very soon about where to go in September.â
In May, El Guru took a trip to Barcelona, Costa Brava, and Cadiz, Spain. He wrote to Greg and said, âI had a great time. I spoke Spanish the whole time I was there. Barcelona is an international city with something they call the Magic Fountain - real colorful with some shows - but the city is too big for me. I took an all-day bus trip to Costa Brava - rugged coastline, small towns, and friendly people. The long train ride to Cadiz was well worth it and I stayed for a few days lying on the beach, flirting with the girls and talking with the locals. I loved Cadiz. I see that J. Edger Hoover died. He was a shithead. And someone shot George Wallace but he didnât die - one out of two. Nixon keeps bombing Hanoi and Haiphong Harbor. He should not get re-elected but the American public is dumb. Kennedy screwed himself with Chappaquiddick. And I donât think McGovern will make it if he gets the nomination. Iâm not smoking dope at all. Iâm enjoying reading various books. I know youâre a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, but watch out for the Mets. With Willie Mays now, theyâre off to a hot start. I hope you decide to go to one of the schools in Kansas. Maybe we could meet halfway from Albuquerque for a few days if I end up at home instead of somewhere in Europe.
